annales.cls: fix for more than 6 publications; example.tex: fix typo
The default command set for including original publications at the end accepts at most 5 papers. Having 6 included papers (and I believe there is no upper limit for the number of papers included in the thesis), it would be nice to have an option for 6 (maybe 7) papers. A sample of recently published theses from our department suggests from 3 to 8 papers included in the thesis, and all of them printed in the back.
The main issue is the positioning of the black rectangular label on each odd page, which is moved down with each subsequent paper. If used as-is, the 6-th paper's label goes out of page space, and the title is positioned incorrectly. Right now the style file introduces an offset of 35mm with each new paper (if I understand it correctly) with label sizes of 35mm as well, which if reduced to 29mm, allows to include 6 papers, occupying the same vertical space and not exceeding any margins (35 * 5 = 175, 29 * 6 = 174).

If there are no strict guidelines on the size of the labels and the number of included papers, it would be nice to make it flexible. Or at least provide some documentation on what can be done to the style file to achieve this.
Yes, that was something I wondered as well while working on the template. The start position, the size and skip of the labels are stated in the annales style guides, so those are what I used for the template.
At the moment, if you have more original publications the only way is to play with the size of the labels and possibly even move the location of the first one closer to the top. Change the minimum height
values in \AddTabs
command as well as the size of the \addtolength\boxskip
in the \origpub
command to your new label height.
You may need to play around with the \vspace*{\dimexpr\boxskip-6mm\relax}
part as well to keep the information about the publication positioned nicely with the label. Unfortunately, I can't give any strict numbers here, since the \boxskip-6mm is already based on trial and error for the original 35mm label size.
The Annales guidelines available here https://utuguides.fi/c.php?g=657189&p=4624107 provide two Word templates for Science and Technology theses, one with numbered citation ([XX]) and one with name-year citation (Familyname I. et al., YYYY). The latter is the standard in my field, and it will save us, students, a lot of time if there is a pre-built option for switching between bib-styles, similar to how the languages are switched.
The template uses natbib
package to handle bibliography/citations so you can play with supported style options with \bibliographystyle
in the main .tex
file and/or \setcitestyle
command in the class file to most likely get your desired style of citations.
I believe the University of Turku requires at least one supervisors, but it is common in our department (Faculty of Science/Department of Physics and Astronomy) to have three supervisors (perhaps there are more). I have checked a sample of recent theses produced by our department, and found at least one work with a single supervisor and at least two works with three supervisors. Mine is the third one to have three supervisors in this sample, and I obviously cannot add third supervisor using the current style.
The supervisors/reviewers/opponent (2 + 2 + 1 hardcoded) are set up with \TitleBack
https://gitlab.utu.fi/samnuutt/annales/-/blob/master/example.tex#L97-101
which accepts 5 arguments (hardcoded)
https://gitlab.utu.fi/samnuutt/annales/-/blob/master/annales.cls#L502-505
It could be nice to have an option for 2 and 4 supervisors, arranged in a table, which will allow to input any number of supervisors from 1 to 4, covering all possible cases. Otherwise, people like me have to dig through the cryptic TeX style files to change default settings.
Hi,
The parameters of the \TitleBack
command are handled as text blocks so you can e.g. put {\mbox{}}
to leave one of the supervisor/reviewer fields empty or do {Academic title, Firstname Lastname\\Affiliation\\[2ex] Academic title, Firstname Lastname\\Affiliation}
in one or both of the supervisor fields to have three or four supervisors.
